How does AI credit pricing work?

AI credit pricing works like a prepaid balance. You hold a pool of credits, and every time an AI agent does work it spends some of them, based on how much it reads and writes. A quick task uses fewer credits than a long one. You pay for the work done, not for each person who logs in.

Definition

AI credit pricing is a pay-for-usage model where you buy credits and each AI agent spends them in proportion to how much it reads and writes while doing a job.

In short
  • Credits are a prepaid balance that AI agents spend as they work.
  • A short task costs less than a long one, because agents are charged for what they read and write.
  • With FrugalPod, 1 credit is 1 cent, and every plan includes every pod and the whole team.
  • Plan credits refresh monthly and don’t roll over, while bought credits never expire.
  • A hard budget cap stops a pod from spending more than you set.

What is a credit, and what does it pay for?

A credit is a unit of prepaid usage. When an agent reads an email, checks a record or drafts a reply, it uses AI, and that use is what credits cover. The more an agent reads and writes, the more credits the job takes. Credits do not pay for a seat or a login. They pay for finished work, so a quiet week costs less than a busy one.

Why do some tasks cost more than others?

Cost follows effort. Sorting a short enquiry into a category means reading a few lines and writing one label, so it is cheap. Matching a month of bank lines to your books means reading and writing far more. Think of a taxi meter rather than a flat fare: the length of the trip sets the price. FrugalPod’s usage page shows where credits went.

How is it different from paying per user?

Per-seat pricing charges for each person who has access, whether or not they use it. Credit pricing charges for the work, so a team of three and a team of thirty pay the same way. That suits small businesses where one owner, a bookkeeper and a part-timer all touch the same pod. FrugalPod has no per-user pricing. For a fuller side-by-side, read FrugalPod vs per-seat AI tools.

How do FrugalPod credits and plans fit together?

FrugalPod’s Free plan has no monthly fee and starts you with 100 free credits, no card needed. After that you pay as you go at $1 per 100 credits, from $5, in packs of $10, $25 or $50, or any amount from $5. Starter is $19 a month for 2,000 credits, and Pro is $49 a month for 5,500. Enterprise is custom. Full details are on the pricing page.

What stops credits running away from you?

Three things. Every pod has a hard budget cap that agents cannot exceed. Anything that sends, spends, publishes or changes a record waits for your approval. The activity log and usage page record what each agent did. Plan credits refresh monthly and don’t roll over, while bought and welcome credits never expire, and plan credits are used first.

Examples in a small business

  • A one-person plumbing business tries the Free plan, spends its welcome credits on a week of quote follow-ups and decides whether to top up.
  • A café owner buys a $10 pack for occasional review replies and never worries about it expiring in a slow month.
  • A small online shop with a steady support queue picks a monthly plan so its credits refresh each month.
  • An agency sets a tight budget cap on its marketing pod while it tests how much a campaign really uses.

Not to be confused with

  • Per-seat pricing: Per-seat pricing charges for each user, while credits charge for the work agents do.
  • Flat monthly fee: A flat fee is the same every month, while credit use rises and falls with the work.
  • Tokens: Tokens are the small pieces of text an AI model reads and writes, while credits are the simple unit you see and pay for.

How FrugalPod uses credits

FrugalPod prices by finished work. 1 credit is 1 cent, and agents are charged by the AI they use, so a quick task costs less than a long one. Every plan includes every pod, custom agents, approvals, budget caps and every integration, and the whole team can use it. Each pod has a hard budget cap, and emails, messages, payments, posts and record changes wait for your approval. The usage page shows where your credits went, and a full activity log records every agent action.

How much is one credit worth?

On FrugalPod, 1 credit is 1 cent, so 100 credits cost $1 when you pay as you go. Packs start at $5, and you can add any amount from $5. Because agents are charged by the AI they use, the credits a task takes depend on how long it is.

Can I know in advance what a task will cost?

Not as a fixed figure. Cost depends on how much the agent reads and writes. A practical way to learn your own numbers is to start on the Free plan, run a few real jobs and check the usage page.

What happens when my credits run out?

You can buy more at any time, or switch on optional auto pay to top up when the balance runs low. A pod’s hard budget cap also limits what its agents can spend. Plan credits refresh monthly and don’t roll over, while bought credits never expire.

Is credit pricing cheaper than a monthly subscription?

It depends on your volume. Light or uneven use often suits pay as you go, because you only pay when agents work. Steady, heavy use may suit Starter or Pro, which include a fixed number of credits each month. Compare your expected usage with the plans before choosing.
